Every layered zirconia case starts at the digital design stage, not the porcelain bench. The incoming scan or impression is processed through exocad DentalCAD, where the technician assigned to your case builds the substructure contour and occlusal scheme before any milling begins. The substructure geometry is validated against the opposing arch and the adjacent contact points in the digital articulator before the file is released to the milling unit. This upstream design review eliminates the fit adjustments that consume chair time at delivery. Substructure milling runs on a Datron D5 five-axis mill using pre-shaded multilayer zirconia blocks from Kuraray Noritake. Block selection is not automatic. The technician reviews the case shade prescription, the adjacent tooth value, and the incisal translucency target before pulling a block. For high-translucency anterior cases we default to Kuraray Katana UTML in the corresponding pre-shade. For posterior layered cases where strength is the primary concern, Katana STML gives us the thicker porcelain shoulder without sacrificing substructure integrity.
