Essix Retainer

Dani Dental has fabricated Essix retainers on a 48-hour turnaround since 2019, using 0.040-inch Zendura FLX sheet material thermoformed over digital models trimmed to the gingival margin. Practices in the Phoenix metro report fewer no-show remakes and faster seat appointments...

Every Essix retainer case begins with a digital model, either an STL from your intraoral scanner or a scan Dani Dental generates from a PVS impression you mail in. The model is verified for margin integrity and trimmed digitally to the gingival margin contour before thermoforming begins. That step alone eliminates the stone-bubble artifact that causes the most common Essix fit failures at insertion. Sheet selection is prescriptive, not arbitrary. For post-orthodontic retention, we default to 0.040-inch Zendura FLX, a dual-laminate material that flexes for easy patient seating while resisting permanent deformation under occlusal load. For bleaching trays sharing the same impression, we use 0.020-inch soft material and run it as a parallel fabrication so you receive both appliances in a single shipment. If your case involves a patient with a documented bruxing history, we flag that in the case notes and recommend an upgrade to the 0.040-inch hard variant or a discussion about a separate occlusal guard prescription. Thermoforming is done on a Biostar pressure-forming unit calibrated weekly against a reference sheet for consistent adaptation depth. Trimmed margins are finished under 4x magnification and inspected for voids, thin spots, and sharp edges before packaging. The technician who trims the appliance signs the case ticket. That name and direct phone extension ship on the packing slip inside the box. For practices managing high-volume orthodontic or aligner-phase retention, Dani Dental offers a standing-retainer program. You batch scan files weekly, we fabricate against a guaranteed 48-hour cycle, and billing consolidates to a single monthly statement. Practices in the Phoenix metro that enrolled in the standing program in 2024 reduced their per-unit shipping cost by pairing retainer shipments with concurrent crown or appliance cases moving through the same account.

HOW IT IS BUILT

From prescription to seated case.

Send a scan file or a model with your RX. A technician reads your intent before any design begins.

02

Design & verify

We design to your margin and occlusion, then verify the fit against your prescription before it ships.

03

Build at the bench

Milled, pressed, or hand-layered as the case calls for, finished by a named technician.

04

Back to your chair

Pre-paid shipping returns the case ready to seat, with the technician reachable if anything needs an adjustment.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What dentists ask about Essix Retainer

What file formats does Dani Dental accept for Essix retainer fabrication?
We accept STL and OBJ files from any major intraoral scanner, including iTero, 3Shape TRIOS, Medit i700, and CS 3700. Files can be submitted through our secure case portal or sent via your scanner's native sharing link. If you are working from a PVS impression, mail it in and we scan it in-house at no added charge before starting fabrication.
Which sheet material do you use by default, and can I specify a different gauge?
Our default for long-term retention is 0.040-inch Zendura FLX. We also stock 0.030-inch and 0.020-inch gauges. Specify the gauge on the prescription form or in the case notes. If a patient has a documented bruxing history, note that too and we will flag it for the technician before thermoforming starts.
What is the standard turnaround time from file submission to shipping?
48 hours from the moment we confirm a clean digital model in the queue. Cases that arrive with model errors or missing prescription details are held pending clarification, which is the most common cause of delay. Submitting a complete STL with a filled-out prescription form gets you the fastest turnaround, every time.
Can I order a bleaching tray at the same time using the same impression?
Yes. Submit one impression or one STL and check both boxes on the prescription form. We fabricate the Essix retainer in 0.040-inch Zendura FLX and the bleaching tray in 0.020-inch soft material as parallel cases. Both ship together, which means one courier trip and one billing line rather than two separate orders.
How do you handle a retainer that does not seat correctly at the patient appointment?
Call the fabricating technician directly. Their name and phone extension ship on the packing slip inside every box. For confirmed fit failures caused by a fabrication defect, we remake the appliance at no charge and ship it within 48 hours. We track remake causes internally. Our current retainer remake rate is below 2 percent measured across January 2024 through April 2026.
Do you offer upper and lower retainers as a paired case, and does that affect turnaround?
Paired upper and lower sets are the most common order we receive. Submit both arches as separate STL files on the same prescription form. We fabricate and ship both as a single case. Turnaround remains 48 hours for a paired set because both arches run through thermoforming concurrently on the same production ticket.
What is the standing-retainer program and which practices benefit most from it?
The standing program is designed for practices producing 10 or more retainer sets per month, typically orthodontic offices or general practices managing active aligner cases. You batch digital files weekly, we fabricate on a guaranteed 48-hour cycle, and billing consolidates to one monthly statement. Practices in the Phoenix metro that enrolled in 2024 reduced per-unit shipping cost by pairing retainer shipments with concurrent crown and appliance cases moving through the same account.
Is an Essix retainer the right choice for a patient with heavy bruxing habits?
For confirmed bruxers, an Essix retainer in standard 0.040-inch material can thin out at the posterior cusps within 6 to 12 months of nightly wear. We recommend noting bruxing history on the prescription form. The technician will contact you to discuss either upgrading to the hard 0.040-inch variant or separating retention and occlusal protection into two distinct appliance prescriptions before fabrication begins.
