Every Essix case starts with a digital model , intraoral scan via iTero, 3Shape, or equivalent, or a PVS impression poured and scanned in-house. Dani Dental does not outsource the scan-to-model step. The digital model is inspected for undercut anomalies, tooth geometry at the trim margin, and any interproximal contacts that would stress the thermoform during seating. That inspection takes roughly 12 minutes per arch and happens before the sheet ever touches the machine. Skipping it is where poor-fitting Essix retainers originate. Fabrication runs on a calibrated vacuum-form press using Erkodent Erkodur sheet material at either 0.75 mm or 1.0 mm depending on your prescription. Erkodur is a copolyester, not a generic PETG, and the distinction matters: it maintains dimensional stability over the patient's first 90 days of wear without developing the stress whitening that cheaper sheets show at stress points. Each sheet lot is logged by batch number so any material variance is traceable. Trimming follows the prescribed margin: scalloped gingival or straight-cut, depending on your preference. This step is done by hand under magnification, not by an automated trimmer running a generic path. The trim line is then flame-polished to remove micro-burrs that cause soft-tissue irritation. If your practice prescribes a specific margin depth relative to the gingival crest, that measurement is recorded in the case file and applied consistently across reorders. Quality check before shipping covers three points: seating pressure on the printed model (confirming the retainer seats fully without rocking), margin smoothness under tactile inspection, and optical clarity. A retainer that shows stress whitening at any contact point does not ship. It gets reprocessed. That is why the remake rate sits below 2.5% rather than at the 6-8% range common to high-volume vacuum-form shops running unattended overnight cycles. Reorders are handled by case number. If a patient loses a retainer 14 months after original fabrication, your front desk sends the case number, confirms no significant restorative changes occurred, and the reorder ships from the archived digital model within 2 business days. No new impression, no new scan fee. The digital archive is retained for 5 years per case as standard.

HOW IT IS BUILT

From prescription to seated case.

01

Prescription in

Send a scan file or a model with your RX. A technician reads your intent before any design begins.

02

Design & verify

We design to your margin and occlusion, then verify the fit against your prescription before it ships.

03

Build at the bench

Milled, pressed, or hand-layered as the case calls for, finished by a named technician.

04

Back to your chair

Pre-paid shipping returns the case ready to seat, with the technician reachable if anything needs an adjustment.

This is our standard pipeline. The exact steps for essix orthodontic retainers are being detailed and will appear here.

MATERIALS

What goes in the mouth.

The material options for essix orthodontic retainers, from zirconia and lithium disilicate to hand-layered porcelain, are being written up. Ask for a Doctor Kit and a technician will talk through the right choice for your case.

CASE WORK

Judge the work on its result.

Before-and-after case work for essix orthodontic retainers is being photographed at the studio. The best proof is a case of your own. Send one and see the finish on your chair.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What dentists ask about essix orthodontic retainers

What file format do you accept for digital Essix retainer cases?
Dani Dental accepts STL and PLY files from any intraoral scanner, including iTero, 3Shape Trios, Carestream, and Medit. Files can be sent via our secure case portal or through your scanner's direct-send integration if already configured. If you are sending a physical PVS impression, we pour and scan it in-house at no additional charge and return the impression with the finished retainer.
Which Essix material thickness do you recommend for a patient coming off fixed orthodontic appliances?
For most post-orthodontic retention cases, the 0.75 mm Erkodur copolyester is appropriate. It is rigid enough to hold tooth position through normal occlusal loading while comfortable enough for full-time wear during the critical first 6 months. The 1.0 mm heavy-retention variant is prescribed for bruxers, patients with high bite force documented in the chart, or cases where the treating clinician specifically requests it. The prescription choice is yours; we fabricate to your specification.
Can I order Essix retainers for both arches on the same case submission?
Yes. Dual-arch Essix cases are processed on the same production cycle and ship together. There is no delay premium for ordering both arches simultaneously. The case file stores upper and lower digital models separately so future single-arch reorders can be fulfilled independently without requiring the opposing arch file again.
What is the turnaround time if I send a physical impression instead of a digital scan?
Physical impressions add one business day for in-house pouring and scanning. Total turnaround from impression receipt to shipped retainer is 4 business days under standard workflow. If your practice is on a courier pickup schedule with Dani Dental, the clock starts when the impression arrives at the lab, not when it leaves your office. Rush fabrication (48-hour total turnaround from impression receipt) is available on request.
How do I handle a case where the retainer does not seat fully on delivery?
Call the direct line on the case sheet and ask for the technician listed by name. That technician reviews the digital model against your seating description within 4 hours and determines whether the fit issue is a fabrication variance (covered under our remake policy at no charge) or a post-delivery change in the patient's dentition. If it is a fabrication variance, the corrected retainer ships within 2 business days. We do not route fit calls through a general customer service queue.
Do you archive digital models for future reorders?
Yes. Every digital model used in Essix fabrication is archived by case number for 5 years as standard. Reorders reference the archived file rather than requiring a new scan or impression, provided no significant restorative changes have occurred since original fabrication. Reorders from archive ship in 2 business days. After 5 years, we contact the practice before purging the file in case an extension is needed.
Can Essix retainers be used as bleaching trays or dual-purpose appliances?
Essix retainers fabricated under standard trim and thickness specs are not designed as dual-purpose bleaching trays. If your patient needs a combination retention and bleaching appliance, prescribe the case as a dual-purpose tray and we fabricate with a reservoir scallop and the appropriate margin relief. Trying to use a standard Essix retainer as a bleaching tray compromises the seal, reduces bleaching efficacy, and increases material stress at the occlusal contact points. The two prescriptions use the same workflow but different trim geometry.
What practices or practice types does Dani Dental serve for Essix retainer work?
General dentists managing their own retention protocol, orthodontists running high-volume retainer programs, and multi-location DSOs looking to standardize retainer quality across offices are all current account types. For DSO accounts with 10 or more locations, Dani Dental can establish a single billing relationship, standardized prescription form, and courier consolidation that simplifies the operational side without adding a procurement layer between the practice and the technician.
