Custom shade matching at Dani Dental starts with a structured submission protocol called the Dani Shade Map. When you send a case, you submit a minimum of three calibrated photographs: one under standardized operatory lighting, one with a VITA shade tab seated adjacent to the preparation, and one with natural light if accessible. Those three anchors let our ceramist build an actual shade prescription rather than guessing from a single image taken under a warm operatory light. From those photographs, the assigned ceramist identifies three distinct shade zones: cervical, body, and incisal. Each zone gets its own layering plan. Cervical dentin characterization, body translucency, and incisal halo effects are logged separately in the case file. If the case involves a vital tooth with strong chroma variation, the ceramist flags it for a preliminary wax-up or unpigmented bisque trial before staining and glazing. Nothing ships final until the ceramist signs off on the zone map against the submitted photographs. Spectrophotometric reference is used as a cross-check, not the only check. The VITA Easyshade V gives us a repeatable numeric anchor. But spectrophotometers read average surface reflectance and miss surface texture, translucency depth, and fluorescence gradient. So the ceramist always runs a visual comparison alongside the device reading. When those two sources conflict, the case gets a second-ceramist review before firing. That two-step check is where most labs skip a step. We do not. For full-arch anterior cases or implant-supported anterior restorations, the protocol extends to an in-process shade check at bisque stage. The dentist receives a photo of the bisque-fired restoration against the shade map reference before the case moves to final stain and glaze. That checkpoint alone accounts for the reduction in remake requests on complex anterior work. You catch the correction before final firing, not after the patient is already in the chair. Every shade case ships with a written Shade Report: the three-zone prescription, the spectrophotometric reading, the material (typically feldspathic layered porcelain or cutback zirconia depending on the case), the firing schedule used, and the ceramist's direct contact number. If a shade concern surfaces after delivery, the ceramist who built the case is the person you call, not a general service line.

For cases requiring maximum strength with esthetic layering, we use a cutback zirconia coping with hand-layered feldspathic over the facial third. For monolithic zirconia cases with esthetic demands, we use multilayer zirconia blanks with surface characterization and glaze. The ceramist recommends a specific stack after reviewing your photographs and clinical notes.
Can I request a bisque trial before final firing?
Yes, and for complex anterior cases involving implant-supported crowns, multiple adjacent units, or patients with documented shade sensitivity, we recommend it. The bisque trial ships before staining and glazing so you can evaluate form and preliminary shade in the mouth. If corrections are needed at that stage, they cost less chair time and zero remake. The bisque check is standard on all full-arch anterior cases and available on request for single units.
What is the typical turnaround for a custom shade anterior crown?
Standard single-unit anterior cases run 7 to 10 business days from impression or scan receipt to delivery. Cases that include a bisque trial add 2 to 3 business days for the trial shipment and return. Rushed cases are accepted on a case-by-case basis, with turnaround as short as 5 business days for single units when no bisque trial is required. Contact the ceramist directly for rush scheduling before submitting the case.
Who is responsible for the shade if it does not match on delivery?
The named ceramist who built the case owns the result. You call that person directly, not a service queue. If the shade falls outside the prescribed zone map on delivery and the photographs submitted meet the submission protocol, Dani Dental remakes the restoration at no charge. That accountability is documented in the Shade Report that ships with every case, including the ceramist's name and direct line.
Do you handle shade matching for implant-supported anterior crowns differently than tooth-supported cases?
Yes, because implant-supported anteriors carry no natural tooth translucency from below, which changes how the ceramist layers the cervical and incisal zones. Emergence profile and soft-tissue color also affect how the final crown reads. For implant anteriors, the Shade Map protocol includes a note on soft-tissue tone from your photographs and adjusts the cervical characterization accordingly. A bisque trial is strongly recommended on any single implant anterior in the esthetic zone.
Can other labs send anterior shade cases to Dani Dental for fabrication?
Yes. Laboratories that accept anterior esthetic cases but lack in-house ceramists for custom shade work send cases to Dani Dental under our milling-as-a-service and fabrication partner program. The referring lab submits the photographs and clinical notes through the same Dani Shade Map protocol. Turnaround and accountability are identical to direct-from-dentist cases.
