What is zirconia made of?

Yttrium-stabilized zirconia exists on a spectrum. Older 3Y-TZP formulations prioritize strength, topping out around 1,200 MPa flexural strength, which made them the default for posterior load-bearing cases. Newer 4Y and 5Y formulations trade a portion of that strength for increased translucency, opening the material up for anterior esthetics. Choosing the wrong grade for the clinical indication is a direct path to either a remake or an esthetic compromise. That decision belongs in the case-planning conversation, not after the restoration arrives chairside.

The sintering stage is where fabrication quality diverges between labs. Zirconia enters the mill in a pre-sintered, chalk-like state at roughly 20 percent oversized to compensate for shrinkage. Controlled sintering cycles, calibrated by furnace and material brand, determine final fit accuracy and color stability.
