Is zirconia better than porcelain?

For most posterior and full-arch restorations, zirconia outperforms traditional porcelain on fracture resistance, longevity, and remake rates. Monolithic zirconia eliminates the porcelain veneer layer that chips under heavy occlusal load. Layered or high-translucency zirconia closes the esthetic gap for anterior cases. The better material depends on position in the arch, occlusal forces, and the patient's esthetic demands.

Traditional feldspathic porcelain and PFM restorations carry a well-documented chipping risk at the veneer layer, particularly in patients with bruxism or heavy posterior contacts. Monolithic zirconia removes that failure point entirely.
