Is emax esthetic?

Lithium disilicate achieves its esthetic result through a combination of crystal microstructure and layered or stained surface finishing. At approximately 360 MPa flexural strength, e.max is strong enough for most anterior and premolar cases without the opacity trade-off that comes with zirconia. Prosthodontists and restorative dentists consistently select it for central incisor crowns and veneers where even a slight grayness at the margin would be clinically unacceptable.

The finished esthetic depends heavily on the technician, not just the material. Shade mapping from an intraoral photograph, correct stump shade documentation, and a layering or staining decision made early in the fabrication sequence all determine whether the final crown reads as natural tooth or lab-made porcelain. A pressed e.max unit built without a verified stump shade can look flat and lifeless regardless of the material's inherent translucency. That upstream case-planning conversation between clinician and technician is where esthetic outcomes are won or lost.
