FAQ
Do labs need a CBCT for implant cases?
A straight answer first, then the context behind it, from the technicians who do the work.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Labs do not always require a CBCT, but having one significantly improves surgical guide accuracy and prosthetic planning on implant cases. When the referring dentist shares a CBCT DICOM file alongside the intraoral scan, the lab can co-register both datasets, verify bone volume, and design a guide or custom abutment that reflects actual anatomy rather than surface geometry alone.
THE CONTEXT
What sits behind it
For straightforward single-implant restorations where placement is already complete, an intraoral scan of the implant position and a scan body reading is usually enough. The lab fabricates the abutment and crown from that digital record without needing volumetric imaging. Turnaround on those cases at Dani Dental runs 5-7 business days from scan receipt.
Full-arch cases and surgical guide fabrication are different. On an All-on-X or implant-supported fixed prosthetic, the CBCT gives the lab the bone map it needs to place guide sleeves at the correct angulation and depth. Designing a surgical guide from an intraoral scan alone introduces avoidable risk, particularly in sites with significant ridge resorption or proximity to anatomical landmarks. Oral surgeons and prosthodontists managing these cases should plan on sharing both datasets from the start.
The practical ask: export your CBCT as a full DICOM folder, not a single image file, and pair it with an STL from your intraoral scanner. That combination lets the lab co-register in software like BlueSkyBio or Implant Studio within minutes rather than hours. If your practice does not yet have a CBCT unit, most imaging centers can provide the scan and send the DICOM file directly. The planning conversation goes faster when both datasets arrive together.
