Do I need to send a bite registration?
A straight answer first, then the context behind it, from the technicians who do the work.
THE SHORT ANSWER
For most crown and bridge cases, yes. A bite registration helps the lab verify occlusal contacts and mill restorations that seat without adjustment. Exceptions exist: full-arch digital cases sent with a verified occlusal scan can eliminate the physical registration, provided the intraoral scan captures maximum intercuspation accurately and the case is not cross-arch or implant-supported.
THE CONTEXT
What sits behind it
For single-unit and short-span bridge cases, a physical bite registration remains the most reliable reference when the occlusal scan quality is uncertain. Thin wax or polyvinyl siloxane PVS registrations stabilize articulation during model mounting and reduce the chance of an open or heavy bite at delivery. Labs working from ambiguous occlusal data have to guess, and that guess adds remake risk on your side and ours.
Full-arch digital cases are a different story. When a clinician sends a calibrated intraoral scan with a dedicated occlusal scan in maximum intercuspation, a separate physical bite registration is often redundant. Dani Dental's digital workflow accepts IOS files from Trios, iTero, and Medit. For implant-supported full-arch cases, a verification jig scan is still required alongside the occlusal record, physical or digital.
If you are unsure whether your specific case needs one, call the technician assigned to your account before you dismiss the patient. Catching a missing bite reference before the prep appointment is over takes 90 seconds. Catching it after the model is poured costs a re-impression and delays the case two to five days.
