THE BOTTOM LINE

Pick zirconia for posterior crowns where occlusal load and fracture resistance lead the decision. Pick Emax (lithium disilicate) for anterior crowns where translucency and shade-match win the case. Monolithic zirconia handles 1200+ MPa flexural strength; Emax sits around 400 MPa but reads as natural enamel. The honest answer for most referring dentists is: both, case by case.

Monolithic zirconia vs Emax (lithium disilicate)

ConsiderationMonolithic zirconiaEmax (lithium disilicate)
Flexural strength1100-1500 MPa360-400 MPa
Best indicationPosterior molars, bruxers, implant crownsAnterior crowns, veneers, premolars
TranslucencyGood (multilayer) to moderate (full-strength)High; reads as natural enamel
Minimum occlusal thickness0.5-1.0 mm1.0-1.5 mm
Preparation aggressivenessConservative; works with minimal reductionRequires more reduction for esthetic layering
CementationConventional cement acceptable; resin preferredAdhesive bonding required for retention + strength
Shade-match ceiling on anteriorsAcceptable to very good with multilayer blanksBest-available for high-esthetic anterior cases
Risk profileWear on opposing enamel if not polished correctlyFracture risk under heavy posterior load

THE TRADE-OFFS

Where each one earns its place

The material choice is a case-by-case call, not a lab-wide preference. Two decision rules cover roughly 80% of single-unit crown referrals coming through Dani Dental.

Pick monolithic zirconia when the case is a posterior molar, the patient is a known bruxer, the prep is conservative, or the crown is going on an implant abutment. The 1200+ MPa flexural strength absorbs the occlusal load that fractures Emax over time. Multilayer zirconia blanks now deliver shade gradients that handle premolars and even some anterior cases acceptably, so the old reputation for opaque, monolithic-white crowns is outdated.

Choose Emax (lithium disilicate) when the case is anterior, shade-match against adjacent natural dentition is the priority, and the occlusal load is moderate. Go with Emax for veneers, anterior crowns, and inlays/onlays where translucency reads as enamel. Recommend Emax when the prep allows 1.0-1.5 mm of reduction and adhesive bonding is feasible. If the patient grinds and the case is anterior, the conversation shifts: night guard plus Emax, or zirconia with high-translucency layering.

Dani Dental mills both materials on the same digital workflow, with turnaround in the 5-7 business day range for either choice. The Dobrikov bench has three generations of ceramic experience, and the technician on your case picks up the phone before fabrication starts if the prescription leaves the material call ambiguous. That conversation is where remakes get prevented.

Honest read: if the referring dentist already has a lab they trust for high-esthetic anterior Emax work and the case is a single anterior central, staying with that lab is fine. Where Dani earns the referral is the cases where one lab handles the posterior zirconia, the anterior Emax, and the implant prosthetic on the same patient without three separate workflows and three separate couriers.
