THE TRADE-OFFS
Where each one earns its place
<p>The decision is driven by the restorative material and the tooth position, not by habit. Most of the single-unit crown work coming through our digital workflow is posterior monolithic zirconia, and chamfer is the correct margin for that material 95 percent of the time. The bulk requirements of monolithic zirconia (0.5 mm minimum occlusal, 0.4 mm axial) are met by a chamfer without sacrificing tooth structure.</p><p>Choose a shoulder margin when the case is a layered anterior ceramic where porcelain needs 1.0 to 1.2 mm of bulk for shade depth and translucency, particularly on lateral incisors and centrals where the cervical third shows. Pick chamfer when the case is a posterior monolithic zirconia crown, a posterior PFM, or any preparation where tooth conservation matters and the material does not require porcelain bulk at the margin. Use a modified shoulder (rounded internal line angle) when you want the bulk of a shoulder but cleaner CAD margin reading from the intraoral scan.</p><p>Tissue biotype matters too: on thin biotypes with a high smile line, the shoulder hides the cement line under porcelain more reliably. On thick biotypes posterior, chamfer wins on conservation every time.</p>
<p>Dani Dental's digital workflow accepts both margin designs without remake penalty, but the honest answer is that chamfer is the right call for the majority of cases we receive. Our average crown and bridge turnaround is 5 to 7 business days on digital cases, and a clean chamfer scan moves through CAD margin marking faster than an ambiguous shoulder. Our remake rate target is under 2.5 percent across crown and bridge, and the margin design that fails most often in our QC review is a rounded shoulder where the internal line angle was softened by the bur, leaving CAD guessing.</p><p>If the case is a layered anterior with high esthetic demand, a properly cut shoulder is genuinely the better margin and we will design and ceramic-layer to that prep without hedging.
