<p>The span-length decision is really a biology decision. Connector stress scales with the cube of pontic length, which is why a 5-unit bridge behaves nothing like a 3-unit bridge under the same bite force. Abutment selection, periodontal support, and parafunction matter more than the unit count itself.</p><p>Pick a short-span bridge when the case is a single-tooth gap with two structurally sound, periodontally healthy abutments and the patient has declined an implant. Choose a long-span bridge when implants are ruled out by anatomy, medical history, or patient preference, and the terminal abutments show no mobility, adequate crown-to-root ratio, and minimal bone loss. Go with an implant-supported alternative when the span crosses three pontics and the ridge can accept fixtures, because the published survival delta widens past that point.</p><p>If you are on the fence, send the case for planning before prep.
