Where each one earns its place
<p>The decision usually comes down to where the implant sits, what the tissue looks like, and whether the restoration is visible in the smile line. Stock components have a real place in implant dentistry; they are not a downgrade when the case supports them.</p><p><strong>Choose a stock abutment when</strong> the case is a posterior molar or premolar with a vertical implant axis, healthy keratinized tissue, and no esthetic exposure. The math works: lower component cost, faster turnaround, and the patient never sees the abutment under a well-contoured crown.</p><p><strong>Pick a custom abutment when</strong> any of the following are true: the implant is in the anterior zone, the implant is angled and needs a corrected emergence, the gingival biotype is thin (titanium gray-out is a real risk under thin tissue, particularly over multi-year service), the case is screw-retained and the stock screw channel exits through the buccal of the crown, or the soft-tissue architecture asks for a margin position the stock component cannot deliver.</p><p>If you are on the fence, send us the scan and the photos.
