Can a veneer be converted to a crown later if it fails?
Yes, and this is a common second-stage restoration. If a veneer debonds repeatedly, the underlying tooth fractures, or the patient develops parafunction that exceeds what bonded ceramic can withstand, the tooth is reprepped circumferentially for a full crown. The prior veneer prep does not compromise the crown prep, because the crown reduction is deeper on all surfaces. Are veneers stronger than crowns?
No. Crowns are structurally stronger because they cover and protect the entire tooth. Veneers rely on the bond to enamel and the remaining tooth structure for strength. A monolithic zirconia crown at 1.5mm has flexural strength above 1000 MPa and protects the tooth from occlusal forces directly. Indication, not strength, drives the choice between them.
How long do veneers and crowns last?
Published longevity data shows lithium disilicate veneers averaging 10 to 15 years with proper case selection and bonding protocol, per multiple peer-reviewed studies through 2020. Monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns show 15 to 20 year survival rates in the same literature. Failure modes differ: veneers most often debond or chip at the incisal edge, while crowns more often fail at the margin from recurrent caries.
