Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have been the workhorse indirect restoration since the 1960s, and the metallurgy is well-characterized. PFM substrates fall into three ADA classifications: high noble (greater than 60 percent noble metal, at least 40 percent gold), noble (at least 25 percent noble metal), and base metal (less than 25 percent noble). The ISO 22674 standard governs mechanical and biological performance for all three, and the 2016 ADA Council on Scientific Affairs review of dental casting alloys found no evidence of systemic toxicity from properly cast substrates in clinical service.
