PROCEDURE

CAD/CAM Milled Restoration

Dani Dental's CAD/CAM milling workflow runs five-axis dry milling in-house, producing crowns, inlays, onlays, and full-arch frameworks with a standard 5-business-day turnaround. Since integrating the current milling stack in 2021, the lab has held a remake rate below 2.5 perce...

Every milled case at Dani Dental opens with a scan-quality gate. Intraoral scan files (.STL, .PLY, or OBJ) are pulled into 3Shape Dental System for margin verification before any tool path is generated. If a scan shows voids in the margin zone or compression artifacts at the interproximal, the technician assigned to the case contacts the sending office directly, usually within two hours, to resolve before cutting material. That step alone accounts for most of the fit variance labs eliminate in the remake cycle, not the milling itself. Design runs on 3Shape Dental System with material-specific compensation profiles built for each block type in the current inventory: Katana Zirconia UTML, Katana HTML, IPS e.max CAD, and Vita Enamic for hybrid-ceramic indications. Tool paths are generated and reviewed before the file transfers to the five-axis mill. Single-unit posterior cases machine in under 40 minutes of active cut time. Full-arch frameworks, which require more staged roughing passes to hold tolerances across the span, are typically complete in one milling session the same production day the design is approved. Post-milling, zirconia restorations go through a calibrated sintering furnace cycle matched to the specific Katana block density. The lab does not run mixed loads of UTML and HTML in the same sintering cycle; doing so introduces shade variance and translucency inconsistency that shows up at try-in. Each sintering run is logged by block batch number, furnace position, and final temperature profile. That log travels with the case file and is available to the sending clinician on request. Anterior milled restorations, particularly IPS e.max CAD crowns in the upper anterior sextant, go through a hand-characterization step after crystallization. The assigned technician applies surface stain and glaze to match the approved VITA or Vita Linearguide shade, referencing the intraoral photograph the sending office submits at case open. The characterization step is not outsourced and not optional for anterior cases. It is the step most volume mills skip, and it is where most anterior remake requests originate at other labs. Shipping uses padded, case-specific trays inside rigid outer packaging. Each parcel includes a QR-linked fit-verification checklist covering seating depth, contact point pressure, and occlusal clearance. The technician who designed the case, not a general customer service rep, is the first contact if the checklist surfaces an issue at the chairside try-in.

HOW IT IS BUILT

From prescription to seated case.

01

Prescription in

Send a scan file or a model with your RX. A technician reads your intent before any design begins.

02

Design & verify

We design to your margin and occlusion, then verify the fit against your prescription before it ships.

03

Build at the bench

Milled, pressed, or hand-layered as the case calls for, finished by a named technician.

04

Back to your chair

Pre-paid shipping returns the case ready to seat, with the technician reachable if anything needs an adjustment.

This is our standard pipeline. The exact steps for CAD/CAM Milled Restoration are being detailed and will appear here.

MATERIALS

What goes in the mouth.

The material options for CAD/CAM Milled Restoration, from zirconia and lithium disilicate to hand-layered porcelain, are being written up. Ask for a Doctor Kit and a technician will talk through the right choice for your case.

CASE WORK

Judge the work on its result.

Before-and-after case work for CAD/CAM Milled Restoration is being photographed at the lab. The best proof is a case of your own. Send one and see the finish on your chair.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What dentists ask about CAD/CAM Milled Restoration

Which file formats does Dani Dental accept for milled cases?
The lab accepts .STL, .PLY, OBJ, and native 3Shape export files (.3oxz). CEREC Connect and iTero files are accepted via their respective cloud portals. If your intraoral scanner outputs a format not listed here, contact the lab before sending. Most formats convert cleanly, but the technician reviews the import before opening a case to catch any mesh integrity issues that could affect margin accuracy.
What materials are available for milled restorations?
Current milling inventory includes Katana Zirconia UTML (high-translucency monolithic), Katana Zirconia HTML (layered-aesthetic framework applications), IPS e.max CAD (lithium disilicate for anterior and premolar esthetics), and Vita Enamic (hybrid-ceramic for minimally invasive prep designs). Material selection defaults are included in the case prescription form, and the assigned technician will flag if the selected material is contraindicated for the prep geometry or occlusal load.
What is the standard turnaround time, and is a rush option available?
Standard turnaround is 5 business days from scan acceptance. A 3-business-day rush option is available for single-unit posterior cases on Katana UTML, subject to current production queue. Rush is not available for full-arch frameworks or anterior IPS e.max cases that include hand-characterization, because the sintering and stain-glaze cycles cannot be compressed without quality trade-offs. Rush cases are confirmed at order open, not after the case is already in production.
How does Dani Dental handle a case where the scan quality is insufficient to mill accurately?
The scan is flagged at the design gate, before any material is cut. The technician contacts the sending office within 2 hours to describe the specific deficiency, whether that is a void at the buccal margin, interproximal compression, or missing opposing data. A rescan request or partial rescan guidance is issued at that point. This step adds a day in some cases but prevents the chair-time loss of a poorly fitting restoration that requires a remake appointment.
Can Dani Dental mill restorations for cases I am planning with implant abutments?
Yes. Milled zirconia and IPS e.max restorations on implant abutments are a standard part of the case mix. The lab fabricates the abutment and the restoration as a coordinated unit when both are ordered together, which eliminates the interface fit variance that comes from ordering them separately through different vendors. Implant-supported full-arch milled frameworks on titanium or zirconia are also available; those cases open with a planning call to confirm the scan-to-surgery data chain.
What is the remake policy if a milled restoration does not fit at chairside?
If a milled restoration fails the fit-verification checklist at try-in and the failure traces to a lab error (margin adaptation, contact point, or occlusal interference outside the accepted range), the case is remade at no charge and prioritized in the production queue with a 3-business-day target. The sending clinician contacts the assigned technician directly using the number on the case card. A photo and the completed checklist accelerate the review. Remakes caused by patient movement during scanning or prep changes after the case opened are quoted separately.
How should I submit shade information for anterior milled restorations?
Submit an intraoral photograph under natural or corrected light alongside the VITA Classical or Vita Linearguide shade tab reference. A photo taken against the shade tab in the patient's mouth is more useful than a written shade designation alone. For complex anterior cases, a pre-operative photograph of the contralateral tooth or the existing restoration provides the technician with a characterization target. Cases that arrive without photographic shade reference default to the written designation, which increases the probability of a shade adjustment appointment.
Does the lab offer milling services for other dental labs that lack in-house milling?
Yes. Dani Dental provides milling-as-a-service for mid-sized labs that outsource CAD/CAM production. Partner labs submit design files directly; Dani Dental mills and returns unfinished or finished units depending on the partner's workflow. Turnaround SLAs, file format requirements, and material inventory are set up in a one-page partnership agreement before the first case. The minimum volume to establish a partner account is 20 units per month.
