FAQ
Which dental material looks most natural?
A straight answer first, then the context behind it, from the technicians who do the work.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Feldspathic porcelain delivers the highest optical mimicry of natural enamel, but lithium disilicate (e.max) is the clinical sweet spot for most restorations: it replicates translucency, value, and surface texture while offering fracture resistance feldspathic alone cannot match. For anterior full-arch cases, layered zirconia over a high-translucency substructure comes closest to natural dentition at scale.
THE CONTEXT
What sits behind it
Prosthodontists and general dentists choosing material for anterior cases are weighing three optical variables: translucency, fluorescence, and surface characterization. Feldspathic porcelain scores highest on all three but is brittle enough that a solo feldspathic crown in a bruxer can fracture within 18 months. Lithium disilicate balances esthetics with a flexural strength around 400 MPa, making it the preferred anterior choice in most high-esthetic cases where the bite load is manageable.
For full-arch implant cases, multi-layer zirconia has changed the conversation significantly since 2018. High-translucency (HT) and ultra-high-translucency (UHT) zirconia grades now achieve 40-48% light transmittance, closing most of the visible gap with natural enamel. When a skilled ceramist adds custom staining and surface texture, the result reads as natural to patients and cameras alike. The tradeoff is that monolithic zirconia still lacks the depth-of-field that layered porcelain achieves, which is why anterior single units in the esthetic zone often still favor e.max.
Dani Dental's ceramics team works from intraoral scan data and, where provided, digital smile design references to match existing dentition in the same appointment workflow. Shade prescriptions go to a named technician, not a general production queue, which matters most in anterior cases where a half-shade miss is visible at conversation distance.
