Soft relines serve a different population. Post-extraction patients, patients on bisphosphonates with compromised tissue healing, or anyone presenting with inflamed or atrophic ridges benefits from the pressure-distributing quality of silicone-based materials. The cushion effect reduces focal loading on thin tissue. That same pliability is also the limitation: soft liners absorb stain, harbor bacteria if not meticulously cleaned, and degrade faster under the chemistry of saliva and denture cleansers.

For general dentists managing a high-volume removable caseload, the practical decision point is this: if the patient can tolerate firm mucosal contact and the denture needs structural correction, go hard. If tissue health is the primary concern and you are managing the patient toward a definitive reline or new prosthetic in under 18 months, go soft.
