What is the best crown material for grinders?

Bruxism puts crowns at risk in two ways: bulk fracture and opposing tooth wear. Full-contour monolithic zirconia handles bulk fracture well because there is no porcelain-zirconia bond to fail. The tradeoff is wear on the opposing dentition. Choosing a zirconia grade with 3Y or 4Y stabilization (rather than 5Y high-translucency) keeps the material hard enough to resist fracture without accelerating wear on natural enamel beyond what PFM would produce.

For posterior bruxers, a 3Y monolithic crown milled at full contour is the standard starting point. Occlusal thickness of at least 1.2 mm is required, and the prep design should support that minimum. For anterior cases where the patient also presents with heavy protrusive contact, multilayer zirconia gives a shade gradient without the catastrophic failure risk of e.max in a grinder. E.max is a reasonable choice only when bruxism is mild and a night guard protocol is documented and being followed.

For general dentists managing a high-volume bruxism caseload, the practical answer is to standardize on monolithic zirconia for posteriors and reserve multilayer or lithium disilicate for anteriors where the grinder is also wearing a guard.
