What sits behind it

Bonding agents work by penetrating the collagen matrix of etched dentin and polymerizing in place, forming a resin-interdiffusion zone called the hybrid layer. This layer is the mechanical foundation for every bonded restoration. On enamel, phosphoric acid etching creates microporosities that the adhesive resin fills and locks into. On dentin, the chemistry is more sensitive because residual moisture and exposed tubules affect penetration depth and ultimate bond strength.

For the clinician, system generation matters. Older total-etch systems (fourth and fifth generation) etch enamel and dentin separately before applying primer and adhesive. Self-etch systems (sixth and seventh generation) combine those steps, reducing technique sensitivity but sacrificing some enamel bond strength. Universal adhesives now handle both protocols, which simplifies inventory without forcing a compromise. Choice depends on the substrate, the luting cement, and whether the lab-fabricated restoration is ceramic, zirconia, or resin-based.
