What is an Essix retainer?

Essix retainers are fabricated by pressure- or vacuum-forming a clear thermoplastic sheet over a stone or digital model of the patient's corrected arch. The lab receives either a PVS impression, a poured model, or an intraoral scan file, then thermoforms the sheet, trims the margin to just below the gingival line, and polishes the edges. Turnaround from scan-to-delivery at a full-digital lab runs 3-5 business days on average.

For general dentists and orthodontists, the Essix design is the workhorse retention appliance because it is low-profile, nearly invisible, and easy for patients to seat and remove without chairside adjustment. A standard Essix tray covers all teeth from second molar to second molar and exerts passive pressure across the full arch. Unlike a Hawley retainer, it has no wire component, so it does not correct minor relapse; it only maintains the existing position.

Labs that fabricate Essix retainers on a digital workflow can batch-produce multiple arches from a single print run, which matters for practices managing high patient volume or DSO accounts with 10-plus locations. Material choice affects longevity: PETG sheets typically last 12-24 months with nightly wear before micro-fractures develop at the occlusal surface. Some labs offer a thicker 0.060 inch variant as a dual-purpose retainer and light night guard when bruxism is a secondary concern.
