THE SHORT ANSWER
A multi-unit abutment (MUA) is a small titanium connector that threads directly onto an implant fixture and creates a standardized platform for attaching a full-arch prosthetic framework. MUAs allow angled implants, typically placed at 17 to 30 degrees, to be corrected to a parallel path of insertion so the final bridge or denture seats cleanly across all four to six fixtures.

Multi-unit abutments solve a geometry problem inherent to full-arch implant surgery. Posterior implants on All-on-4 and All-on-X cases are intentionally angled to avoid anatomical structures like the maxillary sinus or inferior alveolar nerve. Without an MUA, those divergent implant axes make it nearly impossible to fabricate a passively fitting superstructure. The abutment's angled collar, available in 0, 17, and 30 degrees from most implant systems, redirects the screw channel and gives the lab a flat, parallel platform to work from.
