How to take retracted shade photos?

Retracted shade photography gives the ceramist the raw data that a Vita shade guide alone cannot. A shade tab held against the gingival third, a second frame at the incisal third, and a full-arch retracted shot together let the technician map value, chroma, and translucency zone by zone. Without retractors the lips cast a warm shadow that shifts the apparent hue and leads to mismatched restorations. That single workflow step eliminates a large share of anterior redo requests.

Camera setup matters as much as the shot itself. A high f-stop (f/22 to f/32) maximizes depth of field so the shade tab and the adjacent tooth are both in focus. Ring flashes are convenient but can flatten surface texture. A twin flash positioned at roughly 45 degrees on each side renders lobe structure and surface characterization more accurately, which is exactly what the ceramist needs to replicate texture on a feldspathic or layered zirconia case.

For general dentists sending anterior cases to an outside lab, the photo file is the clinical handoff.
