Dual-laminate designs pair a soft inner layer with a hard outer shell, which extends wear life and maintains occlusal stability for moderate cases without the adjustment period that full-hard acrylic requires.

Hard acrylic, typically fabricated on a stone model or from a digital scan, is the clinical standard for severe bruxism. At 3-4 mm thickness with a flat occlusal plane, it discourages muscle hyperactivity rather than accommodating it. Patients with porcelain restorations, implant crowns, or significant tooth wear patterns are better candidates for hard acrylic because soft materials allow continued parafunctional movement that can fatigue the restorations over time.

Turnaround and fit precision matter as much as material choice. A night guard fabricated from an accurate intraoral scan rather than a PVS impression eliminates the dimensional distortion that causes premature wear at contact points. Labs that process digital files directly into milled acrylic blanks typically deliver better fit accuracy than pour-and-press workflows, which translates to fewer adjustments at delivery and higher patient retention of the appliance.
