THE SHORT ANSWER
An e.max crown is typically cemented with resin cement after etching the intaglio surface with 9.5% hydrofluoric acid for 20 seconds, then applying silane coupling agent. Conventional glass ionomer or resin-modified glass ionomer are suitable for full-contour monolithic restorations with adequate retention form. Resin cement is mandatory for thin veneered or minimally invasive preparations where mechanical retention is insufficient.

The cementation protocol depends on preparation design and restoration thickness. Full-contour monolithic e.max crowns (IPS e.max CAD or Press) with retentive preps tolerate self-adhesive resin cements and resin-modified glass ionomers without the acid-etch step, which simplifies chairside workflow. For posteriors with sound retention geometry, that approach cuts seating time while maintaining long-term bond strength documented in studies over 5-year follow-up periods.
For anterior cases, veneered e.max restorations, or any prep with reduced occlusal height under 1.5 mm, resin cement with full adhesive protocol is the defensible choice. That means HF acid etching the ceramic intaglio surface at 9.5% concentration for 20 seconds, rinsing thoroughly, applying a silane primer, then bonding with your preferred light-cure or dual-cure resin. Skipping silane on lithium disilicate is the most common lab-side and chair-side mistake that leads to debonding within 18 months.
