How are porcelain veneers made?

THE SHORT ANSWER
Porcelain veneers are fabricated by scanning or taking an impression of the prepared tooth, designing the restoration in CAD software, and pressing or layering feldspathic or lithium-disilicate ceramic to precise thickness (typically 0.3-0.7 mm). The ceramic is then stained, glazed, and fired to match the target shade before final polish and quality inspection.

What sits behind it
The process starts with case data: either a digital intraoral scan or a physical impression from the referring dentist. At Dani Dental, scans go directly into the CAD design queue same day. The technician designs each veneer to the approved wax-up or digital smile design, locking in incisal length, labial contour, and emergence profile before any ceramic touches the furnace. That front-loaded design review is where shade failures get caught, not at delivery.
For most anterior veneer cases, the ceramic of choice is either pressable lithium disilicate (e.e.max Press) or hand-layered feldspathic porcelain. Pressed restorations offer predictable strength and translucency in a single ingot; layered feldspathic work allows more nuanced optical depth for high-esthetic central incisor cases. Prosthodontists and restorative dentists requesting smile rehabilitation cases frequently specify layered feldspathic when the anterior six need to integrate with natural teeth under varied lighting conditions.
After shaping and initial firing, technicians apply characterization stains and glaze in two to three additional furnace cycles, refining surface texture and value until the restoration matches the submitted shade tab and any custom photography provided.
