Minimum thickness by zone

For monolithic posterior crowns in 3Y-TZP zirconia (flexural strength near 1200 MPa), 0.5mm occlusal and 0.3mm axial is the documented floor. The 2022 ISO 6872 classification confirms 3Y zirconia as a Class 5 ceramic, which is the only ceramic class cleared for sub-millimeter posterior wall thickness. Drop below 0.5mm occlusal and the failure mode shifts from clinical wear to fracture risk inside the first 24 months.

What is the difference between 3Y, 4Y, and 5Y zirconia?
The number refers to mol% yttria stabilizer. 3Y-TZP has the highest flexural strength (around 1200 MPa) and lowest translucency, ideal for posterior crowns and full-arch frameworks. 4Y sits in the middle at roughly 900 MPa with improved translucency for premolar and bicuspid esthetics. 5Y reaches 700-800 MPa and the highest translucency, used for anterior crowns and veneers where shade depth matters more than maximum strength. Can zirconia be milled thin enough for veneers?
Yes. 5Y zirconia veneers can be milled to 0.3mm at the incisal and 0.5mm at the body, which falls inside the range historically reserved for lithium disilicate. The tradeoff is that 5Y at veneer thickness has less fracture toughness than e.max at the same thickness, so case selection matters. Dani recommends 5Y zirconia veneers for patients with documented bruxism or thin enamel; for purely esthetic anterior cases on stable occlusion, lithium disilicate is often still the cleaner answer.
Does thinner zirconia require a different cementation protocol?
Thin zirconia (under 0.7mm) benefits from adhesive resin cementation rather than conventional cement, because the bond contributes meaningfully to the restoration's effective strength at that thickness. Surface treatment with airborne particle abrasion (50-micron alumina at 2 bar) followed by an MDP-containing primer is the documented protocol.
