Flexural strength by zirconia generation

Not all zirconia is the same material. First-generation 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal) tests at 1,100 to 1,200 MPa flexural strength per ISO 6872 (Zhang & Lawn, Dental Materials, 2018). It is opaque, and it is the workhorse for posterior crowns and bridges where strength outranks esthetics. Fourth-generation 5Y-TZP, the high-translucency formulation used for anterior monolithic crowns, drops to roughly 600 to 700 MPa to gain the optical properties. 4Y-TZP sits in the middle near 800 to 900 MPa.

Will zirconia wear down the opposing teeth?
Properly polished monolithic zirconia wears opposing enamel at rates comparable to natural enamel-on-enamel contact, per a 2016 Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry study. The problem is unpolished or roughly-adjusted zirconia, which acts as an abrasive against opposing dentition. Any chairside occlusal adjustment must be followed by repolishing with a zirconia-specific polishing kit. Can zirconia be used for anterior crowns?
Yes, but the generation matters. First-generation 3Y-TZP is too opaque for anterior esthetics in most cases. Fourth-generation 5Y-TZP delivers translucency that approaches lithium disilicate while retaining roughly 600 to 700 MPa flexural strength. For high-demand anterior cases (centrals, lateral incisors with thin facial walls, or patients who reject any opacity), layered zirconia with a feldspathic facial veneer over a zirconia core delivers the esthetics. Submit a shade photo with the Rx and the ceramist on the case will recommend the right approach.
How long do zirconia crowns last?
Clinical studies tracking monolithic zirconia crowns past the 10-year mark report survival rates above 95% with no catastrophic fractures in the cohort (Sailer et al., Clinical Oral Investigations, 2018). The dominant failure modes are not fracture; they are biological (recurrent caries at the margin, periodontal loss) or cementation-related debonding. Material longevity past 15 years has not been fully characterized because zirconia restorations have not been in widespread clinical use long enough, but the in-vitro fatigue data projects 20-plus year service life under normal occlusal load.
